Lathe Woodworking Instruction
Using a lathe is something not every woodworker knows how to do. For this reason it is sometimes necessary for crafters to use books and DVDs that teach lathe woodworking instruction. You may also hear lathe work referred to as woodturning. What makes woodturning so unique is that the wood is moving thanks to the lathe yet the tool shaping it stays still. This is an ages old craft that is used for making all kinds of items. Examples of items made with woodturning techniques include pool sticks, chair and table legs, canes, pens and so much more. The lathe is a tool that dates all the way back to ancient Egypt and was also used in ancient Rome. These days woodworking lathes are motorized, making for convenient use.
Before you learn the basics of using a lathe, it is important to take safety precautions. One of the most important safety devices are safety goggles to protect your eyes from debris and dust. You can find full face masks that not only include eye protection but respiratory protection as well. One thing you don't want to wear are gloves as they can get caught in the machinery. Another thing you may not need is ear protection because the lathe is a reasonably quiet piece of machinery.
There are a variety of books devoted to using a lathe. One is Taunton's Complete Illustrated Guide to Turning by Richard Raffan. This book is a wealth of detailed information and more than 900 full color photographs that show you everything you need to know about using a lathe. You will also learn about various other materials and tools used in the art of woodturning. Another recommended book that can help you master your lathe is The Lathe Book: A Complete Guide to the Machine and Its Accessories by Ernie Conover.
You might also want to try some DVDs to learn lathe woodworking instruction. Turning Wood by Richard Raffan. This DVD shows you the basics of this craft. Another title is Beyond Wood Portrait of an Artist -- The Fine Art of Turned and Sculpted Wood.
